the mother road. chapter 2.

June 27, 2016

so there we were. on route 66. at the beginning of an epic journey that had already been pretty dang amazing.

from texas, we rolled on into new mexico…the official land of enchantment. and since we couldn’t pull over right here, you’re getting my dashboard view from my spot in the happy van…

which wasn’t too shabby…

we were entering the turquoise trail…something we’ve been stalking on roadtrippers pinterest for, like EVER.

we basically pretty much stalked roadtrippers in general before and during this entire trip. thanks, y’all! if you haven’t check ’em out, you totally should!!

and of course no JG trip would be complete without a fleamarket of sorts, so we tracked down an outdoor market or two while in santa fe…(todd and dad were reallllly excited about this…in fact they were hoping we would buy something really big and insanely heavy to help with the homesick blues. just kidding. just kidding.)

we stayed at the La Fonda in downtown Santa Fe and i soooo recommend it!!! great views. great food. and realllllly cute bathrooms. 🙂

and we truly were enchanted not just by the landscape but also by the huge cathedrals…

from there, we traveled on to the quirkiest, funkiest little village of madrid, new mexico….

where we discovered homemade chocolates…

and of course, we were obligated to give new mexico beer a try at the hollar (no that’s not dad sitting at the bar…just a random new mexico cowboy)

dad was busy with these two…

and then we were off again…

headed for gallup, new mexico and the famous hotel el rancho, home of the movie stars. after first stopping to appreciate a traditional native american dance…

and let me tell ya, if you have ever wondered what the spirit of john wayne, of katharine hepburn and kirk douglas is like, you can feel it. alive and well at the el rancho.

when you walk through those doors, you feel like you have stepped into another realm. a realm where wild west cowboys ride the open range and play poker in the saloons. where the horses are hitched outside at the hitching post and there’s a gunfight just around the corner.

and the el rancho just kept getting better…because the 49er bar in the back room was truly like something out of the movies…

we soaked up every square inch of the el rancho. every dollar bill taped to every square inch. every 2-step….but alas, all good things must come to end. and we had miles to go before we slept. miles to go before we slept…

stay tuned, the grand canyon is coming next!!! chapter 3 in our mother road journey full of planes, trains, and automobiles… and if you missed chapter 1, click here.
