“Let ’em dance.”

March 4, 2024

Time to dig out your Walkman from the junk drawer, and bust out your red cowgirl boots for the first ever themed spring Junk-O-Rama Prom!!

💃🪩🕺In honor of Footloose’s 40th anniversary, Junk-o-Rama Prom will be channeling all things 1984 Footloose! Saturday, March 23, gates open at 6 o’clock for happy hour & food, music to follow.

Footloose is truly the type of movie that shapes you. Makes you dig a little deeper within yourself. Makes you ponder things. It is also the type of movie that makes you want to burn holes in the bottoms of your dancing boots at Junk-O-Rama Prom. (snag your tickets HERE)

Although the movie is light-hearted and fun, the plot of the movie was actually based on a real town in America (our fave neighbors to the north in Oklahoma to be specific) A little town, where it was against city ordinances to dance in public. . .

Footloose is loosely based on the town of Elmore City, Oklahoma. The town had banned dancing since its founding in 1898 in an attempt to decrease the amount of heavy drinking. One advocate of the dancing ban was the Reverend from the nearby town of Hennepin, F. R. Johnson. He said, “No good has ever come from a dance. If you have a dance somebody will crash it and they’ll be looking for only two things—women and booze. When boys and girls hold each other, they get sexually aroused. You can believe what you want, but one thing leads to another.” Because of the ban on dancing, the town never held a prom. In February 1980, the junior class of Elmore City’s high school made national news when they requested permission to hold a junior prom and it was granted. The request to overturn the ban in order to hold the prom was met with a 2–2 decision from the school board when school board president Raymond Lee broke the tie with the words, “Let ’em dance.“-Wikipedia

So next time you are boogeying down to Two Tons of Steel at Junk-O-Rama Prom, think about those kids who only wanted to be able to dance at their senior prom. We decided to commemorate the kids who went against the grain, Footloose, and Kevin Bacon by making our own version of the infamous tee. . .

Hailing from the lone star state (corpus christi to be exact), our beloved Lori Singer won best breakout performer of the year in 1984. A quick google search confirmed that Kevin Bacon is from Pennsylvania, but we love him all the same.

We have got some new and old faces that will be joining us at Prom this year!

And special t-shirt sales on site from @sixdegreesofkb benefiting @kevinbacon non-profit!!! 🕺🕺🕺🕺

Also @yellowrosebykendrascott will be doing pop-up on site! And corsage workshop by @jenniferperkins

Who thinks @kevinbacon should come??!!
